A-Tuwani, South Hebron Hills: Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian residents with stones, injuring two. Police and soldiers detained a resident

On Saturday, 23 November 2024, around 2:00 P.M., as members of the Harini family were sitting at the front entrance of their house, two settlers approached with a dog. The family members shouted at them to back away, and the settlers attacked the house with stones, injuring two family members in the face. The settlers then walked towards the Havat Ma’on outpost, and the two injured members of the family were treated at the hospital in the town of Yatta for bruises and scratches on their faces.

The family members called the police, and an officer who arrived a few minutes later heard their account of the incident, went to Havat Ma’on, and returned about 20 minutes later, escorted by soldiers. The officer told Hafez Harini (55) that he would have to travel in a jeep with the soldiers to file a complaint. However, after Harini got into the jeep, the soldiers put a bag over his head and took him to the military base in Susiya, where they handcuffed him and forced him to sit outside in the cold for about an hour and a half. No one came to speak to him. From there, the soldiers took him to the Kiryat Arba police station, and there, too, they made him sit outside. A police officer came up to Harini, removed the bag from his head, and took him for questioning, which was conducted in Hebrew, on suspicion of attacking the settlers. Harini explained to the interrogator that it was the settlers who attacked his house and that if he had attacked them, he would not have called the police. After the questioning, and after an Israeli activist signed a bond for 1,000 NIS (~ USD 275) guaranteeing Harini would appear for questioning if required, Harini was released.
