Video testimony: Cyclist ‘Alaa a-Dali lost a leg to injuries sustained at the Return Protests, March 2018
On 30 March 2018, the first day of the Return Protests by the Gaza perimeter fence, 20-year-old ‘Alaa a-Dali – a resident of the city of Rafah and a member of Gaza’s Palestinian Cycling Team – was hit in the leg at the protest that took place east of Rafah. The doctors were unable to save his leg and were forced to amputate. In a video testimony to B’Tselem, a-Dali describes his life after the injury, his efforts at rehabilitation, and his hopes to return to bicycle racing.
From the time the Return Protests began (30 March) to the end of November 2018, gunfire by Israeli troops has killed over 180 Palestinian protesters – including 31 minors – and injured over 5,800.
