Fatalities since Operation Cast Lead

The Fatalities' data can be shown either by the date of the event in which they were hurt, or by the date of their death. Since some of the fatalities died of their injuries days, weeks and sometimes months after they were hurt, choosing the view affects the distribution of data.

The figures do not include:

  • Palestinians executed by the Hamas Government
  • Palestinians who died following an infringement of the right to medical treatment in the West Bank, after Operation Cast Lead
  • Palestinians who died after Israel delayed their transfer for medical treatment outside the Gaza Strip.
  • Two traffic police officers who were shot dead on 15 March 2009 near the moshav of Massu’a, in the Jordan Valley. The circumstances of their death have not yet been determined.
  • A Palestinian detainee who died on 15 June 2009 after four days in a PA’s General Intelligence detention facility. According to reports and photos that reached B’Tselem, the body bore extensive marks of serious trauma. The PA’s General Intelligence said he was killed when he leaped down from a high place in an attempted escape, and that the circumstances of his death are being investigated.
  • Eight Turkish citizens and one American citizen of Turkish origin who were killed on 31 May 2010 by Israeli security forces during a mission to gain control of a flotilla to Gaza, in international waters.
  • A soldier killed on 7 January 2011 when struck by a mortar shell soldiers fired at armed persons near the Gaza perimeter fence.
  • An Israeli civilian killed by gunfire in Jenin on 11 April 2011. The identity of the shooter and the reason for the shooting remain unknown.
  • An Israeli civilian, killed by being hit by a truck in Tel Aviv on 15 May 2011.
  • An Israeli soldier killed on 18 August 2011 by soldiers’ gunfire during exchange of gunfire with armed individuals near Eilat.
  • Six Israeli civilians and a member of the Israeli security forces who were shot to death on 18 August 2011 in an attack near Eilat. According to the IDF Spokesperson, eight of the attackers were also killed. Their identity is not yet known.
  • A Palestinian fisherman shot and wounded by soldiers on 28 September 2012 while fishing off the coast of Beit Lahiya, near the northern border of Gaza, died a few hours later in the hospital. A B'Tselem inquiry indicates a suspicion of negligence in the medical treatment provided to the man.
  • Five Palestinians who were killed during Operation Pillar of Defense in the Gaza Strip under circumstances that suggest they were hit by a Palestinian rocket. B’Tselem has been unable to verify this information.
  • A Palestinian killed on 14 January 2013 by gunfire approximately one kilometer from the perimeter fence around the Gaza Strip. The source of gunfire is unknown.
  • A Palestinian detainee who died on 23 February 2013 in Israel Prisons Service custody during a period when he was being interrogated by the Israel Security Agency (ISA). The circumstances of his death are still under investigation.
  • A Palestinian resident of East Jerusalem, who worked as a bus driver for the Israeli Egged bus company. Found hanged on 16 Nov. 2014 in the bus he drove. Circumstances of his death remain unclear.
  • A Border Police officer killed on 18 Nov. 2014 in a gun battle between police and Palestinians who attacked a synagogue in Har Nof, Jerusalem, killing four worshipers. The source of his gunshot wounds is not yet known. The two assailants were killed.
  • Palestinian minister who died on 10 Dec. 2014, after an altercation with security forces during a protest in Turmusaya. The circumstances surrounding his death remain controversial even after a postmortem attended by Palestinian and Israeli pathologists.
  • A Palestinian killed 22 Sept. 2015 when an object he was about to throw at soldiers exploded.
  • A 14-year-old Palestinian who died on 11 October 2015 in al-Birah during clashes with Israeli security forces after being hit by a blunt object and falling from a height of approximately two meters. B’Tselem’s investigation found that it is highly likely that the blunt object that hit the boy was a stone thrown by a Palestinian, but did not entirely rule out the object being a rubber-coated metal bullet.
  • A soldier killed by a Palestinian citizen of Israel in a shooting attack at the Beersheba Central Bus Station on 18 October 2015. The assailant, who was later killed by police gunfire, and a foreign national, who was mistakenly shot by a bus station security guard, was beaten by passersby and died several hours later.
  • An Israeli civilian killed on 21 October 2015 by shots fired by soldiers stationed as security guards in Jerusalem, after a confrontation with them.
  • An Israeli civilian killed on 23 Dec. 2015 near Damascus Gate, East Jerusalem, by Border Police gunfire when they shot at two Palestinians who had stabbed another Israeli civilian to death. The two assailants were killed.
  • Two Israeli civilians shot to death in a Tel Aviv pub and another Israeli civilian, a taxi cab driver, who was also shot dead by the shooter, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, as he fled - on 1 January 2016. A week later, the shooter was shot dead by police in ‘Ar’arah.
  • A reserves officer killed by soldiers’ gunfire at Gush Etzion Junction on 24 February 2016. The gunfire was aimed at a Palestinian who, according to a statement by the IDF Spokesperson, had tried to stab people waiting at a hitchhiking station, and was also hit and wounded by the gunfire.
  • ISA trooper shot and killed on 8 March 2016 near the Gaza perimeter fence, on its Israeli side, by another ISA trooper who mistakenly took him for a Palestinian suspect.
  • An Israeli civilian who died of heart failure during the attack in Tel Aviv on 8 June 2016, in which three Israeli civilians were shot and killed by two Palestinians.
  • Palestinian fisherman who drowned on 4 January 2017 after an Israeli navy boat collided with the fishing boat he was in, by the Beit Lahiya coast, near the northern border of the Gaza Strip.
  • A Palestinian citizen of Israel and an Israeli policeman were killed during a home demolition operation in Um al-Hiran in the Negev, southern Israel, on 18 January 2017. According to media reports, police fired at a resident’s car which was heading downhill. The car then hit two policemen: one was killed and the other sustained moderate injuries. When the car came to a halt, police again fired at the driver and then kept him from getting medical care for 20-30 minutes. He was pronounced dead later that day.
  • A Palestinian who was held in Palestinian Authority custody and died in hospital in Ramallah on 5 March 2017. According to the PA, he died two days after launching a hunger strike.
  • Palestinian citizen of Israel , shot to death by the civilian security guard of the Kafr Qasem police station during clashes between residents and police officers, in which a police cruiser was torched. According to media reports, Taha had approached the police station. He died of his wounds later that day.
  • Two Israeli police officers fatally shot by three Palestinian citizens of Israel inside the al-Aqsa compound and at one of its entrances, and the three gunmen, who were fatally shot by police inside the compound on 14 July 2017. According to media reports, another police officer sustained mild gunshot wounds.
  • 16-year-old Palestinian boy killed when unexploded ordinance detonated in Khirbet Ibziq on 22 July 2017.
  • Palestinian killed in Abu Dis on 22 July 2017 when an object he was about to throw at security forces exploded.
  • Palestinian detainee who died on 14 September 2017 at a police station in Gaza
  • An Israeli soldier who was stabbed to death on 30 November 2017 by a Palestinian with Israeli citizenship while waiting at a bus stop in the city of Arad.
  • A Palestinian with heart trouble who sustained minor hand injuries from shrapnel when a base of the Hamas military branch was bombed in Beit Lahiya on 8 Dec. 2017, and then died in the hospital to which he was evacuated after some 30 minutes of CPR.
  • An Israeli civilian who was stabbed and critically injured by a Palestinian citizen of Israel on 5 February 2018 while waiting at a hitchhiking post at the entrance to the settlement of Ariel. He succumbed to his wounds later that day. The assailant was run over by a military officer and fled the scene.
  • A Palestinian citizen of Israel who was mortally wounded by soldiers’ gunfire on 3 March 2018, and died of his injuries shortly after. According to the military, he was fleeing in a stolen car and during the car chase that ensued crashed into a hitchhiking station near the settlement of Ariel. He got out of the car and was then shot by soldiers.
  • A mentally disabled Palestinian citizen of Israel who was fatally shot on 17 August 2018 by a police officer in al-Wad (Ha-Gai) St. in the Old City, after he attempted to knife another police officer.
  • A Palestinian who died of a congenital heart defect on 8 September 2018 while in the custody of Israeli security forces, several hours after soldiers arrested him at his home in Beit Rima.
  • An 11-year-old Palestinian boy who was injured in the back of the head by the impact of a blunt object on 14 September 2018, during the Return Protests near the Gaza perimeter fence, east of Jabalya Refugee Camp.
  • A Palestinian killed on 2 October 2018 by shots fired from an unknown source while he was two kilometers away from the Gaza perimeter fence.
  • A Palestinian prisoner who died on 12 October 2018 while in IPS custody.
  • An Israeli military officer. According to the military, shot and killed on 11 November 2018, by an Israeli officer during a gun battle in Bani Suheila, after a vehicle he was riding in with other soldiers, all of them plain clothed, was detained at a Hamas checkpoint. Two Hamas military branch operatives were killed in the gun battle and, according to the military, an Israeli officer was moderately wounded by shots fired by an Israeli officer. The soldiers reportedly entered the Gaza Strip disguised as members of a medical aid organization. Four more Hamas military wing operatives and a Popular Resistance Committee activist were killed in the incident. To allow the soldiers’ vehicles to escape, an aircraft fired missiles.
  • A Palestinian who entered Israel without a permit and was fatally shot on 25 January 2019 by police officers after, according to media reports, he fled the police in a car they suspected was stolen.
  • A Palestinian prisoner from the Gaza Strip who died on 6 February 2019 at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, Israel, while in IPS custody.
  • A Palestinian prisoner who died on 8 February 2019 while in IPS custody. Media reports stated that the IPS said he had committed suicide in his cell at Eshel Prison in Beersheba, Israel.
  • A Palestinian detainee who died on 27 March 2019 in PA custody. He had been arrested on 14 March 2019 when he was brought to the Ramallah Police Station, having been assaulted and abducted from his home by unknown individuals.
  • A Palestinian resident of Qabatiyah who was working in Israel without a permit. Died on 23 April 2019 after police beat and arrested him and another Palestinian, who was also working in Israel without a permit. It is not yet clear how he died.
  • 67-year-old Palestinian from Shu’fat R.C., who suffered a thigh injury on 1 June 2019, when an undercover Border Police agent who came to arrest his grandchildren in his yard with other officers pushed him. Died on 19 June 2019 as a result of a medical complication following thigh surgery.
  • Israeli citizen, resident of Ashkelon, who according to media reports was injured while running to a protected space during the firing of rockets at Ashkelon in early May. Jamil died of her wounds in hospital in Ashkelon on 7 July 2019.
  • Palestinian detainee who died on 16 July 2019 while under the custody of the Israel Prison Service at Nitzan-Magen Prison in Ramle.
  • Prisoner in the custody of the Hamas government who died in hospital in the Gaza Strip on 25 July 2019 after suffering a heart attack.
  • A prisoner in the custody of the Hamas government who died on 25 August 2019 in a prison in Khan Yunis, reportedly having suffered an electric shock.
  • A Palestinian prisoner who had cancer. He died on 8 September 2019 while in IPS custody, at Assaf HaRofeh Hospital, in Israel.
  • Palestinian prisoner with cancer who passed away on 26 November 2019, at Assaf Harofe Hospital, while in IPS custody.
  • A Palestinian detainee in the custody of the Palestinian Authority who died on 3 December 2019 in a prison in Jericho.
  • A Palestinian detainee in the custody of the Palestinian Authority who died on 22 December 2019 in a prison in Ramallah.
  • Palestinian citizen of Israel. Shot and killed by Israel Police and Border Police on 6 Feb. 2020 near the Lions’ Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem, after firing at them and fleeing. According to media reports, a Border Police officer was lightly injured.
  • A Palestinian Authority police officer held in custody by the internal security apparatus of the Hamas government. He died on 23 February 2020 at a-Shifaa Hospital in Gaza City.
  • Palestinian prisoner who died in IPS custody on 21 April 2020 at Rambam Hospital.
  • Palestinian prisoner who died in IPS custody on 22 April 2020 at Soroka Hospital.
  • Palestinian citizen of Israel critically wounded by police gunfire in Be'er Sheva on 6 May 2020 while, according to the police, fleeing in a vehicle suspected of being stolen, crashing into a patrol car and lightly injuring a police officer inside. Abu Kaf succumbed to his wounds a short while later.
  • Palestinian citizen of Israel critically wounded by civilian security guards' gunfire on 13 May 2020 at the entrance to Tel Hashomer hospital, after the guards ordered him out of his car and he stabbed and lightly injured one of them. Video footage posted on social media showed the guards shooting him as he lay on ground, no longer posing a threat to their lives. He succumbed to his wounds a short while later.
  • Detainee in Hamas government custody found hanging in his cell on 29 May 2020.
  • Wounded in the leg on 3 August 2018 by Israeli security forces’ gunfire during the Return protests near the Gaza perimeter fence, north of the town of Khuza’a; thousands took part in the protests. Succumbed to his wounds in an East Jerusalem hospital, due to an infection that developed after the injury
  • A Palestinian wounded on 23 June 2020 by live gunfire, during a Palestinian police arrest operation in al-'Eizariyah in which residents clashed with the officers. Succumbed to his wounds a short while later.
  • A Palestinian prisoner and resident of the Gaza Strip who had cancer and passed away on 8 July 2020 at Kaplan Hospital, while in IPS custody.
  • Palestinian prisoner sentenced to death on 18 October 2015 after being convicted of collaboration with Israel and involvement in a murder. Passed away on 22 July 2020 in a hospital in Khan Yunis, while in Hamas government custody.
  • Palestinian woman shot in the chest by live ammunition from an unknown source on 7 August 2020 at her home in Jenin, while Palestinians clashed with military forces entering the city.
  • Palestinian prisoner who died on 31 Aug. 2020 while hospitalized in the Gaza Strip in Hamas government custody.
  • Palestinian prisoner who had a heart condition and died on 2 Sept. 2020, while in IPS custody at Ofer military prison.
  • Palestinian who died of a heart attack on 18 September 2020 after fleeing from soldiers who threw a stun grenade near him, as he was crossing a breach in the Separation Barrier.
  • A Palestinian detainee who died on 22 September 2020 while in PA custody at a hospital in Beit Jala.
  • 16-year-old Palestinian who died on 25 October 2020. Soldiers beat him near the entrance to the town of Turmusaya. B’Tselem is awaiting the results of his autopsy to determine the cause of death.
  • Palestinian prisoner who died on 25 October 2020 while in PA custody at a detention facility in Tulkarm. According to the PA, he was found hanging in a bathroom stall.
  • Palestinian prisoner with cancer and coronavirus who died on 10 November 2020 while in IPS custody at Assaf Harofeh Hospital.
  • A Palestinian citizen of Israel. Critically injured on 28 November 2020 from police officers’ gunfire after, according to the police, he opened fire at businesses in the village and then at the officers. A woman was injured in the exchange of fire.
  • A Palestinian detainee who died on 19 December 2020 while in Israeli custody at Meir Hospital. A medical examination indicated suspected suicide.
  • A 16-year-old Israeli who died from wounds he sustained on 21 December 2020 after the car he was in overturned near the settlement of Kochav Hashachar during a police chase. According to the police, the chase began after police officers suspected the passengers of throwing stones at vehicles near Mikhmas Junction. The circumstances of his death have yet to be clarified.
